Is a Wardrobe Detox Worth it?

We’ve all been there. You open your wardrobe in the morning, it’s absolutely full, and yet somehow you still feel as though you have nothing to wear!

Over time, our wardrobes naturally collect things. There’s the dress you loved five years ago, the jacket that was a bargain but has never quite worked, and those trousers you keep thinking you’ll wear one day. Before you know it, finding the clothes you actually love becomes harder than it needs to be.

This is where a wardrobe detox, or wardrobe makeover, can be so useful. It gives you the opportunity to take stock, work out what is earning its place and make your wardrobe feel enjoyable again.

How do you know when your wardrobe needs a detox?

One of the biggest signs is simply that getting dressed has become frustrating.

Perhaps you regularly try on three or four outfits before settling on something. Maybe you always wear the same small selection of clothes despite having a wardrobe packed with options. Or you might find yourself buying new pieces because you’ve forgotten what you already own.

A personal wardrobe stylist can bring a fresh pair of eyes to this process. Sometimes we become so used to seeing our own clothes that it’s difficult to recognise which pieces are working and which ones are simply taking up space.

Does a wardrobe detox mean throwing everything away?

Absolutely not! I think this is something people sometimes worry about before a wardrobe detox. The aim isn’t to leave you with an empty rail and a very long shopping list.

Instead, it’s about looking carefully at what you have. What fits beautifully? What makes you feel good? What works with several other things in your wardrobe? And, equally importantly, what are you holding onto even though you never actually wear it?

A good wardrobe makeover should leave you with a clearer understanding of your clothes rather than simply fewer of them.

Can you rediscover clothes you already own?

This is often one of my favourite parts of the process. Pieces can disappear to the back of a wardrobe surprisingly easily. You may find a blouse that suddenly works perfectly with trousers you bought more recently, or discover that a jacket you rarely wear looks completely different when styled in a new way.

Working with a personal wardrobe stylist can help you spot these combinations and create outfits you might not have considered before. It can feel a little like shopping, except everything is already yours!

Will it make future shopping easier?

Once you know exactly what you have, it becomes much easier to see what you genuinely need.

Perhaps you’re missing a great pair of everyday trousers, a jacket that works across several outfits, or a few simple tops that bring everything together. Having these gaps in mind can make shopping much more focused and help you avoid buying another version of something you already own.

Is a wardrobe detox really worth it?

If your wardrobe feels cluttered, confusing or simply no longer reflects you, I think it can be incredibly worthwhile.

Our bodies, lifestyles and tastes change, and there’s nothing wrong with allowing our wardrobes to change with them. Sometimes a little time spent sorting, trying things on and putting outfits together is all it takes to make getting dressed feel easy and enjoyable again.
