Transition into Autumn Fashion with Layering

I always feel there’s something rather exciting about Autumn, the beginning of a new season. The moment when summer starts to fade and autumn fashion begins to creep in, meaning our beloved jackets come out to play once again!

We’ve had a scorcher of a summer, when finer and more natural fabrics were the essence of survival, it’s now over to Autumn. Luckily it’s started lovely and warm, allowing us time to still wear our summer favourites and by adding a few clever additions, such as a great blazer, a fine knit, a leather jacket with white jeans or a summer dress will instantly make it feel more seasonal. Or  even light weight boots with knee length shorts. It’s also the cleverest way to get the most out of your existing wardrobe. Whichever you choose, it’s time to experiment and findyourpersonalstyle.

The Secret to Great Layering

Vary lengths: Show a neckline, a hemline or a cuff by wearing various length garments. If it’s chilly, start next to your skin with a pale T/shirt, with an inch of fabric peeping through the neckline. Add an over sized shirt and allow the shirt hem or sleeve to peek out from under a sweater or a blazer. Stick to a maximum of three visible layers to keep your silhouette neat and polished. You could add a hoody instead of the sweater or a blazer instead of the coat. All interchangeable and all give a super cool edgy but ‘not trying too hard’ look.

Mix textures

Combine smooth fabrics like cotton, poplin, silks and satins with rougher textures like a chunky knit or cashmere. Mix silks and lace with leather as well as tweeds and cords.

Most importantly, don’t rush to buy a whole new wardrobe. Just like a wardrobe detox session, take some time to look at what you already own, work out what still works and identify the few pieces that will give everything else a new lease of life.

Autumn dressing should be about mixing, layering and having fun with your clothes and not putting away everything you love just because the season has changed.

Suze’s Styling Tips : before you shop for Autumn, spend 20 minutes trying on some of your existing pieces in different combinations. You’ll probably discover a few outfits you’d completely forgotten about!

Go forth and experiment!!!
